I did not plant this hollyhock, but have enjoyed its beauty none the less. My neighbor, Betty, has such a beautiful landscape in shades of burgundy and pink to match the mulberry hue that her shutters are painted. She meticulously discards plants that don’t fit her color palate. This is how she expresses her creativity; in a controlled environment. My little, lone garnet surprise showed up in my grandma garden this year. Grandma has basil, sunflowers, zinnias, tomatoes, coneflowers, squash, ... continue reading...
Has Nashville Been Triple Sat?
Thanks to the television drama “Nashville,” publications such as The New York Times and even the growing number of celebrities calling Nashville, Tennessee home… all eyes are on Music City. “Nashville ranking as the No. 1 region in the country for job growth in 2012 is evidence of the vibrant economic conditions that we see here,” said Nashville Mayor Karl Dean at a recent conference reported by E.J. Boyer of the Nashville Business Journal. According to the Nashville Convention and Visitors ... continue reading...
Is Ignorance Really Bliss?
Last year about this time, everyone was boycotting Chick-fil-a. Remember the bigot biscuit debate? Not being much on fast food, boycotting wasn’t much of a statement for me. Bootstrappin’
My summer reading list while a bit daunting, has served for a great deal of inspiration. Sheryl Sandberg is currently my muse with her book, Lean In. In it, she explains that it is up to me and no one else to essentially “bootstrap” it. Why is it that a strong personality indicates an authoritative position of power for most men, but is a sign that a woman is a bitch? At the end of the day, I must lean in and as Daddy always taught me, “Stand up and act like I got some sense!” Richard ... continue reading...
Ninny weighs in on #Mayogate!
Barbara Black is someone I have never met, yet my life’s journey has been affected by this little lady more than she could have ever known. She loved life despite any obstacles she encountered along the way. She told stories of driving from Houston to the Balinese Room as a young woman with her friends to see all kinds of 1940s and 1950s icons. She survived breast cancer in the 1970s, when breast cancer was a death sentence for many women. She would later become an accomplished artist by ... continue reading...
